Green guilt

May 28th, 2009

I do my best to be environmentally aware, without coming over all tree-hugger-y. When we shop, we try to buy local, avoid packaging and do simple things like menu planning to avoid food waste (we love The Kitchen Revolution in our house!)

We reuse and recycle where possible. My little girl is wearing dungarees to nursery which have been worn by both her brothers (although I bought her some lovely little t-shirts to wear under them, so she looks more girly.) Rather than buying new clothes each season for the boys I look on Ebay for good quality items which have usually been little worn. And that works both ways as I’ve recently passed on all my maternity clothes to a newly pregnant friend.

Of course, we use cloth nappies and washable wipes too which we try to air dry where possible. We wash our laundry with eco balls and I’ve just started making soap and lotion bars to reduce the amount of toiletries we buy.

We’re aware of the energy we use in the house and when we had our loft converted recently we took that opportunity to make the house more energy efficient and increased our insulation. And before we turn our heating up, we add an extra layer of clothing and see if we really need to crank up the thermostat.

All in all I thnk we’re doing OK from a green perspective. Yes, we could do more, but I do think we’re doing quite a bit. So why do I feel guilty then? Well unfortunately because my parents still live in Northern Ireland, seeing my Mum and Dad means a plane trip, either for them or us. Although going by car would be preferable from an environmental perspective, it’s just not realistic for a short visit. And because they still work, longer visits aren’t always possible.

So that’s the source of my green guilt. I can’t do anything about it, so I just have to live with it….and keep on doing what I can to minimise our environmental impact in other areas.

Buying for Baby – Introducing the Fabulous Itti Bitti D’Lish Nappy!

May 24th, 2009

As I explained last time, I’ve been searching for a slimmer altermative to my Motherease nappies, so I’ve been trialling the Itti Bitti D’Lish nappies which are an ‘All in One’ sized nappy.

WOW! They’re amazing. From the moment you touch the bitti D’Lish you’ll be in love. They have a soft ‘Minkee’ (which is like a longer soft velour) outer shell which is laminated inside so that it is waterproof. The beauty of this is that if your baby has just wee’d you can just swap out the inner booster for a clean one which means that it’s a relatively economical ’sized’ option.

Inside the nappy there are 8 absorbent layers of bamboo which cleverly fold in place to minimise bulk, but which can then be unfolded for washing and drying.   Just genius.  The top booster has a microsuede layer (like the inside of the shell) which means that wetness flows away from your baby and doesn’t come back through again, keeping them feeling dry.

Now, it’s not necessary to use any sort of liner with these nappies, but old habits die hard and I’ve been using one of my normal fleece liners with them.  I think I’ll probably continue doing this, just so that it protects the nappy from the worst excesses of F’s explosive poo’s!

I’ve tried these nappies on both F (almost 2 years and about 28 pounds in weight) and J (6 months and about 18 pounds).  They’ve been pretty much leak free, bar one very disgusting poo from F which nothing would have contained.  They look amazingly cute and are nice and slim fitting – J can wear little girl trousers and leggings over them no problem which makes a nice change.

But at the end of the day, it’s not me who’s wearing the nappy is it?  So what do the nappy wearers think?  Well J is too little to tell me, but F isn’t.  I wasn’t originally going to use the Itti Bitti’s on F, but then tried them the other day.  Next morning, when I told F it was time to get him changed and dressed he went over and picked out an Itti Bitti, saying ‘Nice Nappy’.  Since then, it’s been all I can do to stop him raiding my stock to pick himself out another nice nappy!

I think there can be no higher recommendation than my little boy choosing the Itti Bitti’s over his usual Motherease.  He’s been wearing them since he was born and must be so used to them by now, I didn;’t think he would know any difference.  And I’m sure that he can’t appreciate the aesthetics of the nappy, so the bitti’s must be much more comfortable.

The one thing I haven’t worked out yet is the optimum number of nappies and boosters you’d need.  I’m just waiting for new boosters to be delivered early next week and then I’ll get more of an idea, but I’m guessing that 4 per child per day, with the same number of boosters would be plenty.  I’ll keep track and come back to you…and will give an update on the Itti Bitti Challenge too, as I have my disposable nappy guinea pigs lined up now..

The Itti Bitti Challenge

May 21st, 2009

Just a quick post from me…I LOVE the Itti Bitti Nappies so much that I’m going to challenge 5 x non-cloth users to try them and see what they think. (As long as they give me honest feedback!)

I reckon I can convert at least 2 to part-time Cloth use.   What do you think?

They’re here if you want to take a look at them:

Buying for Baby: The quest for the perfect cloth nappy

May 12th, 2009

I’ll start this by saying that I LOVE Motherease nappies. I bought mine 5 years ago and they’ve been used by no1 son, no2 son and now my GG is using them. They’re simple to use, wash well and dry easily. Plus they very rarely leak – even with no 2 sons explosive fruit poos, which is saying something. When I was looking at cloth nappies all those years ago, I knew I wanted a birth to potty nappy from a cost perspective and Motherease were recommended to me.

They’re a very simple nappy, with poppers to close on your baby. They come with a pop in booster which you’ll need from 3 months or so and you can add an overnight booster to them easily. I’ve always used fleece liners as I think it helps prevent nappy rash and must make things more comfortable for bubs.
The ‘Rikki’ wraps that Motherease produce are recognised to be one of the best. For those of you unfamiliar with cloth nappies, the wrap is the outside layer that stops the wee from soaking into their clothes.  The Rikki wraps close with Velcro and are so easy to put on.

So if Motherease nappies are so great, why am I even considering anything else? Well the only teeny tiny drawback to Motherease nappies are that they’re pretty bulky . This wasn’t so much of a problem for my boys, but even they struggled to get trousers to fit over their nappies. However with my GG, it’s impossible to get any trousers to fit. And although I love her in little dresses, because the nappies come down almost to her knees, it’s really not a good look.

I tried some Kushies that I’d bought a while ago for my Mother-in-law. Kushies are an All-in-one (AIO) type nappy, that is, the wrap and inner bit are all integrated in one. They close with Velcro, so you just open them, wrap it round the baby and close it.

They were OK. Because the inner part is layers of flannel they’re really absorbent. They didn’t leak much but they took forever to dry on the washing line. If you were tumble drying each time that might not be a problem, but I like to get my washing out when possible – it’s cheaper, more environmentally friendly and getting them in the sunshine helps keep them fresh and clean. The other downside was that for my GG, they were still really bulky.

So although I like the AIO type nappy in principle, Kushies weren’t for me.

Next on my list to try were the new Totsbots Easi-tots which are a Birth to Potty all in one nappy. There are lots that I like about these. They’re VERY pretty to look at, with the outer layer being white stars on coloured backgrounds, really cute. They’re also very neat fitting because they’re made from Bamboo which is very absorbent but can be finely woven.  They’re also made in the UK which is a bonus.  The last big plus is that they wash well – washing clean easily without staining.  However, I found that they leaked around the legs on my GG – perhaps she has daintier legs than her Mother!  I also found it a bit annoying to pull the outer bit out of the inside of the nappy for washing.

So, I thought I would compare these to another very popular Birth to Potty all-in one – the Bumgenius v3.  These nappies have pretty coloured outer wraps like the Easi Tots, however these are a pocket nappy which is then stuffed with a micro-fibre insert.  Again, there’s a lot of good to say about these – they’re a snug fit and easy to put on.  But for me the major downside is the washing instructions.  Firstly, you can’t use any baby bottom cream because you could damage the nappies.  Secondly, the recommended washing instructions are ‘rinse, cold wash, then warm wash’.  So they really need to be washed for about 4 hours to get them clean – not good from a timing perspective or environmental perspective.  Lastly, if you don’t follow this onerous washing routine and have a messy poo-er in your family, the micro fibre inserts tend to attract poo particles from the wash, so they come out of the machine speckled with poo fibre.  Gross.

But….you’ll be glad to know that I haven’t given up on finding the perfect slim fitting, leak proof, easily washable nappy.  In fact we’re currently testing Itti Bitti D’lish nappies as we speak and will have an update shortly.  Watch this space!

Buying for Baby: Travel Cots

May 6th, 2009

On the topic of being out and about, where do you start when you’re travelling or staying with your folks perhaps? A travel cot is always useful to have at hand, whether for yourself or for any visitors you may have. They’re pretty bog standard to be honest, we’ve had a couple and they’re pretty much all the same.

We went for a cheapie from www.kiddicare.com which has done us well. The only annoying point on it is the mattress which is covered in a waterproof fabric. It’s great as it’s hard wearing, but every time your baby turns over the fabric rustles – even with a sheet on it the sound of the fabric rubbing is a little noisy. Just a minor complaint though.

If I was choosing again, I might also look for a lighter one – ours is a bit heavy. And our in-laws have one which has a carry handle integrated onto the mattress, which means that you don’t have to slide the cot back into it’s protective cover each time, which can be a little awkward.

I’ve also seen a teeny tiny samsonite pop up cot which is cute, but ultimately will only be useful for a short period of time, so not really worth bothering about.

And once your little one is too big for a travel cot, what then? Well you can buy an integrated ready bed which is basically a blow-up mattress, with an integral sheet, duvet and pillow. We’ve got a Spiderman one for Archie which he loves and so do his friends when they come to stay. However when we go camping later in the year, I’ll be investing in one of these: http://www.intertent.co.uk/product2_869-5-9-1532_Kampa-Airlock-Junior-Bed.htm

They’re great – the air ridge round the outside stops your pre-schooler falling out of bed and they can just sleep in their normal gro-bag or proper sleeping bag. And they’re cheaper than a ready bed too!

We’ll be testing these out later in the summer when we attend a few festivals…Larmer Tree Festival (www.larmertreefestival.co.uk) is the first one coming up. And how that will be with 3 kids is anyone’s guess – but I’ll keep you posted!
