Cheeky Wipes are the best £40 you’ll ever spend

February 29th, 2012

Sorry, this is a bit of a ranty post. I get really frustrated when I go to the Baby Show and show people how fabulous Cheeky Wipes are, only to hear them bemoaning the cost.

These are the very same people that two minutes later walk by with an embroidered sleepsuit costing £15 which the baby will use for about 6 weeks before they grow out of it…. Or a nappy wrapper which costs £15 and you then have to buy refills for. Or who spend £65 on a changing bag. (And apologies if it’s just me who doesn’t get nappy wrappers, what’s wrong with sticking dirty nappies straight into the bin, why do you need MORE rubbish to go to landfill??)

Now I know that the sleepsuits / bibs are very cute. There’s no denying it. And you’ll definitely need a bag for baby related paraphernalia, but it doesn’t have to be a changing bag as such, I haven’t used a changing bag since baby no2….. If you’re on a tight budget there are much better things you could be spending your money on.

If you’re shopping for a new baby, they will need somewhere and something to sleep on, some method of transport and some sort of nappy and something to clean their bum with. You might also need a few bottles & steriliser depending on whether you choose to breastfeed or not, but that’s really it.

You might be splashing out on buying Cheeky Wipes upfront but you’ll quickly see them pay for themselves many times over, which has got to be a better long term investment, yes?

Meat-free March Menu Plan week 1

February 27th, 2012

Firstly, thanks to all you Ladies who facebooked with ideas for my meat-free March.  Don’t be disappointed that they aren’t showing up today, I’ve saved them for weeks 3 and 4 as I realised that I already had, ahem, *quite* a few recipes bookmarked in my new favourite cookery book, River Cottage Veg every day.

As I’ve explained before, my meat-free March is really about breaking out of the monotony of casserole-type things that we seem to eat for almost every meal over the winter and getting a lot more veg into us. Always a good thing.

I will usually have some sort of fish on a Sunday (again, because I don’t tend to cook as much fish as I could/should) and I know that this will irritate some vegetarians out there, but I’m not trying to be vegetarian, but simply to eat no meat. And (in my cookery books anyway) fish comes in a different section to meat, so it doesn’t count. Feel free to disagree with me….

Here’s my menu-plan for week 1, there are some favourite recipes that I’ve done before in meat-free March (and continued to eat throughout the year) and some new ones. Where possible I’ve posted a link to the recipes so you can join in, even for a night or two per week.

Next week I’ll do the next menu plan and a review of what we ate and how it went….

Wednesday: Chilli, cheese and rosemary polenta with tomato sauce

Thursday: Pasta, Broccoli, Anchovies, Parmesan

Friday: Mushroom Baguette and maybe a glass or two of vino for the adults (fish fingers & chips for kids!)

Saturday: Veggie Enchiladas, guacamole, refried beans, cheese

Sunday : Salmon, Green Beans, Tomatoes, Olives, gratin dauphinoise

Monday: Jacket Potato, Beans, Cheese, Tuna, Coleslaw

Tuesday: Potato, tomato, egg salad (Hugh), Halloumi Cheese

The only recipe I coulnd’t find  online was the potato, tomato and egg salad, so I’ll share it here, similar to the version in River Cottage Veg every day

Potato, tomato and boiled egg salad

Ingredients
400g peeled potatoes
4 large eggs at room temperature
250g cherry tomatoes, halved
chives
salt & pepper

6 tbs olive oil
4 tsp cider vinegar
1tsp mustard (Iused french as it isn’t so strong)
pinch sugar

Method
Cut potatoes into chunks and bring to boil in salted water.
Simmer for 8 – 12 minutes or until tender
Drain and leave to cool
Cook the eggs in boiling water for 7 – 8 miniutes until hard-boiled. Cool and peel.
Add the oil, vinegar, mustard and sugar to a srew-top jar and shake well to combine.
Chop boiled eggs, add to a bowl along with vinaigrette.
Add potatoes and tomatoes and toss together well.
Taste and adjust seasoning, snip over chives then serve.

As I said before, I really believe that eating less meat generally is better for us and the environment so if you’ve got any family friendly recipes you can share, please feel free to leave us a comment and a link if possible!

Meat-Free March

February 21st, 2012

This is a bit of a heads up everyone. ‘Meat-free March’ is coming up shortly so we’re giving you advance notice so if you want to join in you’re welcome.

If (like me) you sometimes get stuck in a rut of eating the same meals over and over again each week, then this is a great opportunity to try new things – we promise you won’t miss meat!

This will be the third year that we’ve gone meat-free in March. Eating less meat is better for the environment and eating more veg is always a good thing from a nutritional viewpoint!  Plus sometimes it’s just good to try new things.

If you fancy joining in (even for a couple of nights a week) then we’ll share our menu-plan in advance so that you can get your groceries sorted. If you’re already meat-free and have fantastic family recipes to share, then feel free to leave us details as a comment below, or on a link to our facebook page.

We’ll have the first one menu-plan live next Tuesday, 28th February…..

What to do if your child reacts to wipes

February 13th, 2012

You probably know but one of the reasons that I started Cheeky Wipes is because I have really sensitive skin and have had eczema since I was a child. Thankfully now it is limited to the occasional flare-up (especially if I’m stressed or anxious. Or pregnant….)

Disposable wipes really irritate my hands, whereas I find Cheeky Wipes to be absolutely fine. I love all three of our fresh wipes essential oil blends, Lavender & Chamomile, mandarin & tea Tree Lemon and Rose & Rose Geranium.

Why do we use essential oils?

Well aside from smelling fabulous and leaving your baby smelling great, the essential oils also have other skin healing properties. Plus they’re all anti-septic and anti-bacterial to some extent. Lastly, they also act as a preservative, helping to keep your wipes smelling fresh. You can certainly use Cheeky Wipes without the fresh wipes oil, but we’d only recommend soaking as many as you would use in a day as otherwise they might go musty.

What if my baby is allergic to the oil or has a reaction?

It’s really unusual to be allergic or have a reaction to any of the oils, but it can happen. It is possible to be allergic to Lavender (and I know it can give some people Migraines) however you would probably be aware of this pretty quickly as it is contained in so many baby products for it’s soothing properties.

If your baby does have a reaction to any skincare product at any stage, immediately wash the affected area with clean water (pop them in the bath if it’s easier). Apply Sudo-Cream or similar if necessary until the redness dies down. IUse your Cheeky Wipes with water only for a few weeks and then you can re-introduce the oil – we usually recommend trying the mandarin version as a good alternative.

Things you never want to hear in the middle of the night….

February 10th, 2012

Let me start by saying that I love my husband.  He works really hard to look after us all, in a stressful job, with a 4 1/2 hour daily round-trip commute and he STILL makes time to play with the kids when he gets home.

I get all that, really I do.

But that still doesn’t mean he doesn’t still irritate me now and again.

Last night, he wakened me from a deep sleep by saying ‘The baby is crying’.  Really???  You woke me up to tell me that???

Now if this had been the other way round and I had wakened on hearing the baby (rather than being dead to the world because I’m obviously knackered), I would just have got up and dealt with her.  I would never dream of waking up my sleeping husband to go and sort out any of the children.  Unless we get into vomit territory of course such as a few months ago when I had no1 son and no2 son simultanaeously puking in different rooms….

So why does he feel that it’s reasonable to wake me up?  I know he has to leave ridiculously early, but he can also sleep on the train, there’s no chance of so much as a 15 minute catnap for me.  Besides which he was already awake!!!

Arrgghh.

Grumble over.  Please feel free to share any similar moans and get them out of your system…..
