Bless me Father for I have sinned…it has been 6 months and 2 weeks since I last used cloth nappies, I have been using dirty disposables.
I feel that I can admit it, now that I’m back on the wagon again. My Itti Bitti nappies have been languishing in the hall cupboard since Aerin was born in March. Every time I opened the cupboard to get some Cheeky Wipes they’ve winked at me and waved ‘Hello’ before I slammed the door shut on the nappies and my guilty conscience.
You can imagine what it’s like when you’ve got a newborn and 3 other children. If you’re not feeding the baby, you’re getting the others ready for school / lunch / swimming practice / bathtime /bedtime. Staying on top of the washing was already a mission with my washing machine being on at least once daily never mind adding nappies into the mix.
So I ignored my nappies and used eco-disposables instead . And my Cheeky Wipes of course. But then I saw the lovely Norma from Itti Bitti at the recent baby trade show in Cologne and I had to admit that I hadn’t used my lovely Itti Bitti for a while, but couldn’t quite explain why not!
Now Aerin is 6 months old and at nursery a few mornings a week, I have a bit more time and things aren’t quite as hectic, so that definitely helps. And she’s gone past the pooing 10 times a day stage too, which also helps.
So I dug the Itti Bitti out and introduced Aerin to them and she just loves them of course and looks super cute with her little fluffy bum. But I thought it was worth doing a quick blog post to all the Mums who have their cloth nappies lurking in the cupboard rather than on your baby’s bum (I know you’re out there!) Remember the good thing about cloth nappies is that once you’ve got them, any use you make of them is going to save you money and help minimise your environmental impact through landfill.
It doesn’t have to be all or nothing, you can mix and match if you need to and it suits your lifestyle and circumstances. Dip in and out as you need to and don’t feel bad. Your nappies will welcome you back with open arms when you’re ready…

Just had an update on the Itti Bitti Cloth Nappy Challenge from Jodie G, mum to J (13 years) and E (8 months). ‘I am not as comfortable using ’sposies as I was with J 13 years ago, so have been looking online for an alternative‘. Jodie was so keen to give the challenge a real go that she bought another couple of nappies and some extra boosters – here’s her feedback to date:
Â
‘I thought that now my order has arrived I’d update you with our thoughts on the nappy! Up till the order arrived I tended to put her in the d’lish once a day, normally if we were going out we’d use it then. I hoped that doing this Mr D would realise that its not that scary having her in clothies.
The nappy lasted for around 4 hours before it got really hard and E herself would start to look uncomfortable in it, never once though did the outer shell get damp and my girl wees a LOT!
We also only had one leaky nappy and that was totally my fault, hadn’t run my finger as I normally would around the legs and a little of the insert was exposed. Dirty nappies well, they have been really well contained up to now. I didn’t get a fleece liner so I got some disposable ones instead so not even a mark on the inserts.
Everything washes up really well, dries really quickly so all in all I was looking forward to my order arriving, which it did so today was our first full day in the nappy and I’m impressed! I have a load of washing ready to go in tonight with a bag for the inserts all ready to go. We still have 5 to keep us going tomorrow too and I am looking forward to it.
I’m not daft enough to think that we’ll never have a big leak or an exploding nappy but I’d get those with a ’sposie too so we’ll del with it and hopefully within a day or two I’ll be brave enough to do the full 24 hours instead of wimping out and putting a pampers on at night!
Mr D has taken it all on board and is happy with how the nappies have preformed, J thinks they are pretty cool and E loves them, she giggles when I show her one and sticks her legs up in the air.
Â
Thanks for choosing us to do the challenge, I’m really enjoying it and am definitely on the road to converting altogether!’
Â
I’ll post further updates as I receive them, but this feedback has definitely brought a smile to my face.

Thought I’d drop a quick update of some feedback provided by Angela (mum to L, 8 months & 20 lbs) who said ‘ I have kept to disposables purely for convenience to be honest and to try to keep the washing down, after a while I have just become dependant on them.’
I received an email from Angela today about her first thoughts on the Itti Bitti Challenge:
‘I have used the Itti bitti nappy twice now and so far have really mixed feelings about them. Unfortunately on both occasions that I used the nappy my little girls trousers felt slightly damp where she had wet through, the nappy was not on for very long at all so I was quite surprised at how wet her trousers felt. One of the nappies was a dirty one and to be fair without being too disgusting it was a pretty dry poop so not much spread at all so was really contained within the nappy.Â
On the plus side the nappies fit really well and look realy comfortable as well as look really snazzy, on the ‘how big does my bum look in this’ scale my little ones bum looked quite small in comparision to the bulk from a disposable.
The nappy does wash really well and dries really quickly, due to the dampness I had to wash the whole nappy inc the inner liners. I am going to continue to use the nappy and will continue to update you on my findings as I feel to use it twice and give my verdict is not altogether fair. My little girl really loves the nappy too and loves the feel of it on her face lol, just have to be quick to stop her cuddling it when it has just come of her little bottom!’
Â
I’m pretty sure that I can solve the wetness issue as L is in the right sized nappy. Here’s my recommendations to see if we can fix it:
Â
- First off, when you put the nappy on, make sure you do it tight enough. The nappies are quite low-rise and if they’re not tight enough, they can slide down a bit which causes leaking.  Basically you want it to be as tight as possible around the middle as that makes the legs tighter too. I know that this has been a problem when I’ve sent F off to nursery and they change him there, I always do his nappy up with just one popper gap in the middle, but sometimes he comes back with 2 or 3 and that can cause leaking.
- Secondly, when you’ve put the nappy on, run your finger around the legs and the back to make sure there aren’t big white bits sticking out and that all the nappy absorbent bit is tucked in. You’ll always see a little bit of the inner showing, but if there’s a lot, moisture will wick onto clothes.
Angels dropped me a further email, confirming that maybe she hadn’t been tightening the nappies enough, so she’s going to try that and come back to me. Hopefully that will help someone else out there who’s never tried an Itti Bitti nappy before! Come back soon for further updates from the rest of our challengers.
