How to deal with poo in reusable nappies?

Parenthood is definitely an adventure. We used to chuckle when talking to prospective parents at exhibitions and they were horrified by the prospect of dealing with baby poo!

News alert: You will have to deal with poo

If you've decided to use reusable or 'real' nappies, bravo and well done. Not only are you going to save money, you'll also be doing your bit for the environment. Win, win!

Unsure what the process is for dealing with reusable nappies poo? Here's our guide on how to deal with poo in a reusable nappy:

  1. Be prepared
  2. Get as much poo on the liner as possible
  3. Flush the poo
  4. Rinse & Repeat

Be prepared

Like many things in life, this will be much easier if you're prepared. Before you start the clean-up mission, gather your bits and pieces.

You'll need your (hopefully) reusable wipes, any bum cream you use, a clean nappy and ideally something to entertain / distract your baby while you're changing them.

Get as much poo on the nappy liner as possible

Gently undo the reusable nappy and use the nappy liner (or inside of the nappy on a fleecy pocket nappy) for the first wipe. Whether you use fleece liners or paper liners, this should remove the bulk of the poo, leaving just the smeary bits for your reusable wipes. Set aside the nappy and liner and finish cleaning up your little one and tucking them into a nice fresh nappy.

"Today is my first full day of using your Cheeky DooDoo nappies and I am in love! I haven’t used cloth nappies before (this is baby no.3), but as I am already a big fan of several of your other products I felt confident to try your nappies and you did not disappoint!

Each nappy has comfortably lasted 2-3 hours with no leaks, even when my little one did a huge poo in the car seat! I thought it might take me a few days / weeks to be convinced, but after just 24 hours I’m sold! They are also very easy to wash and dry thank to the 2-part design.

Your customer service has also been fantastic along the way, prompt and helpful replies to my endless questions made me more confident to give it a go." Via Trustpilot

Flush the Poo

Take your nappy to the toilet, poo goes down the loo! You can chuck the whole liner down the loo if it's a paper liner but just remember that even paper liners can block your toilets.

For this reason we recommend fleece liners. With a fleece liner, hold the clean end in your hand, put the mucky end down the loo, hold it and flush. The water pressure should be enough to remove any poo. If it's a VERY sticky poo, you may need to repeat.

If you've got a shower head or bum gun close by, this is GREAT for removing poo too, straight down the loo.

Newborn poo is water soluble and pretty runny, so you may not get much of it off by flushing. Don't worry, just chuck it into the washing machine anyway. The cold rinse and longer wash will take care of it.

News alert 2: Even with disposable nappies, the packet recommends flushing the poo down the loo. This avoids methane build up if the nappies are send to landfill. Gross, eh?

Rinse & Repeat

You don't need to rinse the nappy by hand. Pop the dirty nappy into your nappy bucket, bag, or strucket. A cold rinse of your nappies in the washing machine is sufficient to rinse away any more poo before a longer hotter wash to actually clean. See more detailed nappy washing & care instructions here or your reusable nappy brands guidelines.

After thoroughly washing the nappies and proper drying, your reusable nappy is ready to take on the world again. Reassemble it according to the instructions if it's a two part nappy, and you're ready to go again.

Well done, you've successfully tackled the poop-ocalypse!

Value for Money, absorbent, easy to use nappies

"Dear Cheeky Wipes, after making the wonderful transition from disposable wipes to cheeky wipes I was keen to transition to cloth nappies. I was so ashamed of how much waste we were creating with disposable nappies.

I researched for months and after having such a great experience with your cheeky wipes I knew I could trust your cloth nappies. I ordered your cloth nappies to use as a night time nappy for my daughter and we have been using them for 7 months.

My daughter is petite and we have been using the size 2 nappies since she was approx 7kg and they have been perfect for her.

She is a bit of a heavy wetter and so we just experimented with different boosters until we found a suitable combination (it currently is hemp, bamboo and then microfibre). thank you :)" Via Trustpilot
