How bad are wet wipes for the environment

Wet wipes are particularly bad for the environment as they clog our sewers and rivers,  polluting our oceans, kill precious marine wildlife, and end up getting washed back onto our shores. In an effort to tackle the rising issues that wet wipes are causing to human and wildlife, Cheeky Wipes are encouraging Brits to make the switch from single-use wipes to their reusable alternatives.

The UK-Based Brand Fighting to Eliminate the Billions of Wet Wipes Used by Brits every year

Every year, 11 billion wet wipes are discarded by Brits – this amounts to an average of 163 wipes for every person in the country. As debates on these worrying statistics continue to dominate Parliamentary discussion, one UK-based brand is offering customers a sustainable, and reusable, solution.

Cheeky Wipes is on a mission to provide the UK with reusable wipes that are both convenient and easy to use at home, or when you’re out and about. Their ethically sourced, award-winning reusables mark a turning point in reducing plastic waste and our collective carbon footprint.

Although many brands are beginning to champion biodegradable wipes, Cheeky Wipes claims that even these are not the solution as they still take time to biodegrade especially if wrapped in a plastic nappy sack.  There’s also a significant carbon footprint involved in the end to end supply chain. Instead, the sustainable brand wants more customers to embrace an option that cuts down on waste, saves unnecessary additions to our already-overflowing landfills, and protects the environment.

Helen Rankin, Cheeky Wipes Founder, says, “We’ve been encouraging the public to reduce their single use plastic for years now, especially wet wipes. Ultimately, these are completely unnecessary and only serve to fill our landfills with waste and pollute our precious ecosystems. Cheeky Wipes offers one of the few truly sustainable solutions that can help keep plastic waste to a minimum without having to deal with any compromises.”

Cheeky Wipes have saved 40million packs of wet wipes from landfill since 2016 and have partnered up with Southern Water to promote reusable wipes in areas where drain blockages are high.

Packs of Cheeky Wipes can be purchased online and come in all-in-one kits that include everything you could need for wiping grubby hands and faces, or as individual wipes for those who want to keep their costs as low as possible.

Cheeky Wipes has been a champion of ‘Simple Reusables’ since 2008 when the company’s best-selling reusable wipes kit was first launched. Founded by a mum with eczema and four children, Cheeky Wipes understands that switching to reusable alternatives needs to be easy, rather than a chore.  The Cheeky Wipes team spends most days talking about poo, pee, and periods and loves a chance to help today’s consumers make the switch.

Since 2016 alone, Cheeky Wipes has helped save more than 140 million single-use products from landfills, and, as a result, the business was presented with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development in 2021, celebrating all the hard work the Cheeky Wipes team has put in over the last 13 years.
