What's the difference between these and the cotton pads? The bamboo minky pads are made of bamboo viscose or charcoal microfleece with a minky outer, being manmade materials, these tend to be a little warmer to wear than the cotton pads. The bamboo minky pads are also slightly thicker and therefore more absorbent than cotton pads, so if your periods are on the heavy side, we'd recommend the bamboo minky rather than the cotton.

Cheeky Mama Cloth Sanitary Pads are an eco-friendly, healthier, more cost effective alternative to disposable pads. For those new to cloth sanitary pads (csp) the concept can be a little “Ew!” but to be honest using cloth as opposed to disposables is more comfortable. Because they are so much more absorbent, moisture is drawn into the pad, leaving you feeling fresher for longer.

Disposables have to contain lots of nasty toxic chemicals, dioxins and gels to enable them to be absorbent, which can lead to sensitive skin, irritation and thrush. Bamboo however, has a natural antibacterial quality and because it allows your skin to breath, can potentially reduce the risk of yeast infections and discomfort.

Of course it goes without saying that cloth pads will cost a fraction of what you would be spending on disposables each month which just end up sitting in landfill!

Bamboo / Bamboo Charcoal facing upwards

Insert the pad into your knickers with the bamboo or bamboo charcoal face upwards.  Close the poppers underneath the gusset of your knickers.

Tight Pants

Firstly, I usually try to wear fairly tight fitting pants.  If you usually keep your old, saggy. baggy pants which have really seen better days for that time of the month, time to invest in some new ones!  Tighter pants will help a cloth pad stay in place and avoid slippage.  Cotton knickers are best or cotton / lycra mix.

Turn around if you suffer from slippage

The soft outer Minky fabric has some grip - if it is inserted against the nap of the fabric.  If you notice that your pad is slipping, turn it around 180 degrees, front to back.

  • Rinse them in cold water when you change them and then soak in cold water until you are ready to wash them.
  • Wash at 20c or 30c on a longer cycle, warm washing sets blood stains and can damage your pads.
  • You can give them a squirt of stain spray and/or add a scoop of stain powder to the wash

  • No fabric softener!

  • Line dry, reshape whilst damp.
  • Do not tumble dry

  • No bleach

  • Wash dark colours separately.

  • Vegan friendly
  • Oekotex certified
  • Paraban free
  • SLS free

nice material and overall would recommend
Monday, 21 September 2020  |

At first these were a bit thick for my liking but I quickly got used to them for things like high intensity exercising and yoga. Very easy to clean with cold water soap and stain removal. I felt that the mucus was difficult to get rid of and thus they need a really good wash. very glad a bought a handful as I would recommend to wash as soon as possible so its easier to wash. These are a great price although other more sustainable products are probably out there.
if its your first time trying these do some research to find your right fit!

Not for Me

These pads do have very good coverage, but they are hard to remove period blood from even after washing. Due to them also not having an adhesive they slip and slide around the lining of your underwear which can be quite frustrating.

Response:

Thanks Leigh, I'm glad you are happy with the pants in your kit and I can help with the slippy and washing issues you are having with the pad.
The best way to look after the pads and pants† is to rinse them under the tap in cold water once you take them off. I appreciate this isn't always easy if you are out and about so I'm glad you are finding the wetbag handy! When you get home you can then soak them in a sink or box in cold water (and add a scoop of salt or vanish if necessary) until you are ready to wash them. When you wash them, you can give them a little spray with some stain remover and then wash on 30 on a longer wash - a quick wash wonít give them long enough to move about in the machine. Give that a go and see how you get on.
For slippyness, with the minky pads, turn the pad around 180 degrees so what was at the front is now at the back. The minky fabric can be brushed in 2 directions - one more grippy than the other so when you turn it around it should stay put. We also recommend a good tighter pant with some lycra in as this also helps. I wear my M&S bikini style with 5% lycra and they don't budge. That said, I do wear my period pants with the pads and they do stay nice and snug.

Bouygut as part of a bundle, very good value for money. Lovely pattern and not too bulky. Daughter really likes them

Soft and comfy
Thursday, 27 August 2020  |

I trued a few brands to see what I liked best, and it was Cheeky Wipes I chose in the end. I like the back isn't shiny, so they don't move around as much as other brands. Also I liked the option of charcoal lining rather than bamboo as the darker colour hides the stains etc.

Since first trying Cheeky Wipes cloth pads, I've never gone back to disposables. They are comfy and super absorbent, easy to rinse and wash.

Love this

These are great, they are absorbent, the minky stops it moving around unlike PUL backing. They are comfy too and I don't worry about leaks. Bought for incontinence but would be happy to use for periods too.

Wish Iíd switched years ago!
Monday, 10 August 2020  |

I finally took the plunge and bought some re-useables and canít believe how much I love them. Only used them for one cycle so far and Iíll never go back. Need to invest in some tight fitting underwear as they can slip as suggested but no big deal. Iím amazed how much healthier they feel when wearing and have had no leaks 👍🏻

So glad I switched
Wednesday, 17 June 2020  |

I switched to these pads a couple of months ago and Iíll never look back to disposables now. These feel so natural against my skin and theyíre more absorbent than disposables.
I was surprised at how well they washed too, if you follow the instructions. They come out white every time.
You need to buy a clean/dirty bag or box to hold them in. I have a bag I have hanging in the bathroom with clean ones in one pocket and rinsed ones in another. Just till I have a few to then put in the wash. I take a smaller version if I go out.

The only two downsides (Which are not enough to stop using them), are if youíre out and about and thereís no sink in your cubicle... youíre not going to rinse them publicly, so you have to carry about a full one, which Iím not overly comfortable with. Also, they do tend to move about a little as itís only poppers keeping them on your knickers, not the sticky back like disposables. Nothing major though.
